How do I buy a monthly pass from a fare vending machine?

You can buy an MBTA monthly pass in the form of a CharlieCard at fare vending machines located at subway stations and select Commuter Rail stations.

If you don’t have a CharlieCard yet:

  1. Tap Buy a CharlieCard

  2. Tap Passes → Monthly

  3. Select the LinkPass (or your preferred monthly option)

  4. When prompted, select debit card and tap your Jawnt Pass to pay

  5. A new CharlieCard will be dispensed with your pass preloaded

If you already have a CharlieCard:

  1. Tap your CharlieCard on the fare machine to begin

  2. Tap Calendar Based Monthly Passes

  3. Select your pass

  4. When prompted, select debit card and tap your Jawnt Pass to pay

  5. Tap your CharlieCard again to complete the transaction

Timing to know

  • Bus and subway passes may take 24–48 hours to load onto your CharlieCard

  • Commuter Rail passes activate immediately
