This summer, Harvard employees with a Jawnt Pass debit card can take advantage of significant savings on MBTA Commuter Rail. The MBTA is offering an automatic 50% discount on all Commuter Rail monthly passes from June through August, which could save commuters between $321 and $639 over the course of the summer. On top of that, Harvard’s transit subsidy means you save an additional 60% on the cost of the already-discounted pass.

Note: This discount applies to monthly Commuter Rail passes for Zones 1 through 10, Interzone 1 through 10, and Commuter Ferry passes. This discount does not apply to Zone 1A passes.

Read on to learn how to make the most of this summer discount with your Jawnt Pass commuter benefit.

What do I need to do if I’ve already ordered my monthly pass?

From June through August, the cost of Commuter Rail passes will be automatically discounted by 50%.

If you’ve already enrolled in Jawnt and plan to commute by Commuter Rail this summer, you can reduce the amount you contribute to your Jawnt Pass debit card for the months of June, July, and August. For example, if your monthly transit amount for your Jawnt Pass debit card is normally $360, you can go in and reduce it to $180 for the next three months.

If you don’t make any changes, your card will automatically reload with the full retail cost of the pass each month, and any unused funds will roll over into the next month.

How do I update my Jawnt election?

  1. Use the MBTA Discount Calculator to determine which pass is right for you and what to enter as your monthly transit amount in Jawnt.

  2. Log in to your Jawnt account

  3. In the My Passes section of your Jawnt account, find the Jawnt Pass benefit and click the Edit button.

  4. On the next page, scroll down to your Monthly Transit Amount and click to edit it.

  5. Enter the new value in the pop-up window, then click Update.

  6. At the bottom of the page, click Update enrollment.

You can update your enrollment anytime, but we recommend making any changes by May 7 to take full advantage of the MBTA’s discount starting in June.

What do I need to do when the discount is over?

You’ll follow the same process above to adjust your Jawnt enrollment back to the regular retail price of your monthly pass. Be sure to do this by August 7th to ensure you have enough funds on your Jawnt Pass for the full retail price of the monthly pass starting in September.

Tip: We recommend creating an event on your calendar for the beginning of August to remind you to change your enrollment back to the full price of the monthly pass.

As a reminder, if you don’t make any changes to your enrollment for June, July or August, your card will automatically reload with the full retail cost of the pass each month, and any unused funds will roll over into the next month.
